Who we are

Dutch Rent Check (dutchrentcheck.nl) is an independent project providing free English-language tools for renters in the Netherlands. It is not affiliated with the Dutch government, the Huurcommissie, or any legal organisation.

What data we collect — and what we don't

Your housing data stays in your browser. All calculator inputs — floor area, rent, WOZ value, point scores, deposit amounts — are processed entirely on your device using client-side JavaScript. Nothing you enter into the calculators, checkers, or demand letter generator is ever sent to our servers. We have no database of tenant data.

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect anonymous, aggregate usage statistics. This includes:

Pages visited and time spent on each page
General geographic region (country/city — derived from IP address, which is then discarded)
Browser type, operating system, and device category
How you arrived at the site (search engine, direct link, etc.)

GA4 does not receive your rent figures, WOZ value, property address, name, or any other housing-related input. Those never leave your device.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets first-party cookies on your device (typically _ga and _ga_*) to distinguish unique visitors and sessions. These cookies do not contain personally identifiable information and are used solely for aggregate analytics.

You can prevent GA4 cookies from being set by:

Using a browser with tracking protection (Firefox, Brave) or an ad blocker
Adjusting your browser's cookie settings

No other first- or third-party cookies are set by this site.

Legal basis for processing

We process analytics data on the basis of legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Our interest is understanding how the tools are used in order to improve them — for example, identifying which pages are most visited, whether users on mobile have a different experience, and whether new features are being used. We have assessed that this interest is not overridden by your rights and interests, given that:

No sensitive data (housing details, income, address) is processed by analytics
IP addresses are anonymised before storage by Google
You can opt out at any time (see above)

Data retention

Google Analytics retains event data for 14 months (our configured retention period). After that, it is automatically deleted. User and event data is stored by Google on servers within the European Economic Area or under Standard Contractual Clauses ensuring GDPR-equivalent protection.

Third parties

The only third party that receives data from your visit is Google (Google Analytics). Google acts as a data processor on our behalf. Their processing is governed by Google's data processing terms and Standard Contractual Clauses.

External links on this site (to huurcommissie.nl, rijksoverheid.nl, wetten.overheid.nl, etc.) are navigational only. Clicking them takes you to those sites — no data about you is passed along in the request beyond what your browser sends normally (e.g. the referring URL).

The Service Costs Audit links to a PDF hosted by the Huurcommissie. Downloading it is subject to the Huurcommissie's own privacy policy.

Your rights under GDPR

As a resident of the European Economic Area, you have the following rights regarding personal data we process:

Right of access — request a copy of data held about you
Right to erasure — request deletion of your data
Right to object — object to processing based on legitimate interest
Right to data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format
Right to restrict processing — ask us to limit how we use your data

Given that analytics data is anonymous and aggregated, we are generally not able to identify or retrieve data relating to a specific individual. If you have a request, contact us at contact@dutchrentcheck.nl and we will respond within 30 days.

If you believe your rights have been violated, you may lodge a complaint with the Dutch data protection authority:

Changes to this policy
